LPG Earthing Conversion

26 June 2025

Some jobs are straightforward. However, they still require detailed knowledge of the operational environment, components, and relevant standards and regulations. This results in a final electrical installation that successfully meets appropriate standards of safety and quality. LPG installations, particularly bulk storage tanks, require special attention to earthing due to the potential for static electricity buildup and the presence of flammable materials.

Our customer required an LPG Earthing conversion with the installation of a TT (Terra-Terra) earthing system. This was necessary because the existing earthing system was not suitable for the LPG installation. The TT system ensures that the LPG installation's exposed metal parts are effectively grounded, providing a path for fault currents to flow to the earth and protective devices to be tripped.

It was essential that the TT earthing system had a reading of below 10 ohms and therefore, we installed multiple earthing rods to achieve this. We connected the installation's exposed conductive parts (e.g., the tank, pipework, and other metallic components) to the earthing rods. To ensure the LPG installation is protected by appropriate devices, that will trip in the event of a fault current, we installed Residual Current Devices (RCDs). When installing the TT earthing system, we ensured compliance with relevant regulations and standards, such as BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations).
