National Engineering Day
5 November 2025
Today is National Engineering Day!
The day is organised by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The intent is to bring engineering to life for young people, helping them to understand what it means to be an engineer. The variety of opportunities that come with choosing an engineering career path is being showcased across the engineering community. This year’s campaign is asking what does it mean to be an engineer today, and what do we think engineering will look like in 2050?
So, from a Vogal Group perspective, our engineering team today consists of highly skilled M&E engineers, with a wide range of experience, including design engineers, industrial and commercial electricians, fabricators, welders, pipefitters and mechanical engineers. They are qualified, competent, and experienced in improving our customers manufacturing facilities.
What do we think M&E engineering will look like in 2050? Well, welders will still look like they comb their hair with a firework and electricians (probably on the 36th Edition) will still look at you as if they know something you don’t….
However, change is happening, and further changes are likely to include:
➕ Improvement of AI-Driven Design and Simulation, e.g. CAD and CAE tools.
➕ Advanced manufacturing will become more widespread.
➕ Robotics and Automation will be prevalent.
➕ Expansion of the infrastructure and systems for a net-zero future.
➕ Introduction of new advanced materials.
➕ Smart grids to manage diverse renewable energy sources and storage.
➕ A shift to electric vehicles (EVs) including smart charging infrastructure.
➕ AI in electrical systems for load management and automated control.
➕ More IoT devices, from smart buildings to industrial automation.
➕ Cybersecurity will be critical to protect against threats to smart systems.
Our M&E engineers will need to undergo continuous learning but will still need hand skills and problem-solving abilities. They will also still be guided by professional ethics and the responsibility to develop solutions for customers that improve their facilities and enhance safety.
Wet your appetite? We are recruiting a Mechanical Engineer Apprentice. If you are practical and enjoy solving a challenge, then starting your career with an engineering apprenticeship could be perfect for you. You will have excellent long term employment prospects and gain industry recognised qualifications.
